Introducing, Wallace and Gromit

Wallace and Gromit are two of the most exciting arrivals ever at White Post Farm.

They are two Black Tree Monitors and a truly spectacular lizard. They can grow to around 120cm but amazingly, 70% of this length is made up by their remarkable tail. This long tail is prehensile which means it is adapted for use in the same way we and other animals use their hands. It can grasp hold of objects and grip onto trees and branches. This makes the monitors amazing climbers and in the wild they spend lots of their time high in the forest canopies, descending to the ground from time to time to hunt their prey.

With this in mind their new bespoke enclosure in ‘Reptiles of the World’ offers them an enriching environment in which to explore and to make the most of their natural skills and agility with excellent viewing for visitors to enjoy their fascinating behaviour.

Their personalities are as striking as the way they look. In fact the Exotics Team say they have already fallen in love with them. They have been at the farm for a while ensuring the team can understand them and how they respond to interaction, before they moved into the new exhibit. What they’ve learnt is that they are incredibly active, really curious and extremely responsive to their new environment, especially at feeding time. This has been a challenge but one which the team are approaching with passion and great enthusiasm.

We are confident that they are one of the most active lizards we have ever had here at White Post Farm. We are so excited for you meet them!
